Should a Trenton Retiree Pay for a Supplement?
The great strength of Original Medicare is freedom. Any doctor or hospital across the country that participates in Medicare will see you, with no network map and no referral slips. The catch arrives afterward, when Medicare's share is paid and the rest lands on you with no annual ceiling.
Medigap policies exist to absorb that remainder. They are sold by private insurers, carry a monthly premium, and, depending on the letter you pick, pay part or nearly all of what Parts A and B leave unpaid.
For Trenton clients we sort out two things. Does a predictable premium beat a cheaper plan with copays in your situation? And if so, which letter and which of our carriers gives the strongest value for the money?

We do not offer every plan available in your area. Any information we provide is limited to those plans we do offer in your area. Please contact Medicare.gov or 1-800-MEDICARE to get information on all of your options.
Where Original Medicare Leaves You Exposed
Imagine a four-day admission at Capital Health Regional Medical Center for pneumonia. Part A asks for $1,736 at the start of that 2026 benefit period. Afterward, the lung specialist visits, chest X-rays and breathing tests fall under Part B, where you first meet a $283 deductible and then usually owe 20 percent of every approved charge.
That 20 percent share has no cap. A year that includes knee surgery or chemotherapy can produce a very large balance. A supplement replaces that uncertainty with a fixed bill each month.
- Your Part A deductible and long-stay hospital coinsurance
- The Part B coinsurance, which is usually a fifth of the bill
- Skilled nursing coinsurance under most letters
- Foreign travel emergencies on several letters, handy for long trips abroad
Comparing the Two Most Popular Letters
Letters are standardized by federal law, meaning every insurer's G or N pays exactly the same benefits. Only price and service differ, which makes comparison shopping worth it.
Plan G is a favorite with people new to Medicare. Once you pay the yearly Part B deductible, it covers nearly all remaining approved costs. Plan N usually charges a lower premium; in return expect a copay of as much as $20 for certain office visits and as much as $50 for an ER visit that does not end in admission.
Plans C and F are closed to anyone whose Medicare eligibility started on January 1, 2020, or later. Ask us about other letters such as K or L if a low premium matters most.
Timing Is Everything
You get a single six-month guaranteed window for supplements, opening in the first month that you are both 65 and covered by Part B. Insurers must accept you during that window at their normal rates, regardless of health conditions.
Apply later and a carrier may review your medical history and can turn you down or charge more, outside of a few protected situations. That is why we encourage people who are still preparing to turn 65 to decide early.
Prescriptions Are Separate
No supplement sold today covers outpatient prescriptions. You will want a stand-alone drug plan as well, and our Part D page shows how we compare them by the medicines you take.
Supplements and Doctors Across the River
Because a supplement follows Original Medicare, it works with any Medicare provider in the nation. That matters in Trenton, where many people see specialists in Pennsylvania or in Princeton and Hamilton. Comparing this with a Part C plan and its network is often the heart of the decision.
A Free Second Opinion on Your Coverage
Jot down your prescriptions and the names of the doctors you see. We line up what you have now against the plans we represent and point out the real differences in cost and in where you can get care. Expect about thirty minutes, with no decision required during the call. You can also read our background before calling.

Will a supplement work at hospitals in Pennsylvania?
Yes. Wherever a hospital takes Medicare, your supplement goes along, whether it is in Bucks County, Philadelphia or farther away.
Can I switch supplement letters next year?
You can apply at any time, but after your first six-month window the new insurer may ask health questions and can say no.
Is Plan G worth the higher premium compared with Plan N?
It depends on how often you visit doctors and how you feel about small copays. We price both for you so you can see the difference in dollars.
Do premiums go up with age?
Pricing methods vary by company. Some charge the same rate regardless of age, while others raise rates as you get older. We explain each carrier's approach.
